Strike back – encourage your customers to buy travel insurance ASAB
You may have seen on Linked In a post by BIBA Travel & Sports Insurance Scheme Provider JLU about the importance of buying travel insurance as soon as you book – ASAB following a travel insurance piece by Martin Lewis on his Money Show. JLU now see ASAB as a key prompt for brokers to use with customers.
ASAB is key to travel insurance protection because customers who don’t buy their travel insurance around the time they book a trip can be unstuck if they fall ill or have an accident. However, this could equally apply in the event of industrial action.
Strikes are rife
With Heathrow airport workers set to vote on strike action, that could upset many Easter holiday plans and those without travel insurance in place could find themselves losing out financially.
Should a strike go ahead, if you have arranged your customers’ travel insurance with Jackson Lee they will find that they are able to make a claim for cancellation, provided that their trip was booked prior to the industrial action being arranged and communicated. This is not the case will all travel insurance policies.
The JLU BIBA scheme policies also provide cover if travel plans are affected by a strike while policyholders are at the airport. In those circumstances your customers will be able make a claim under the travel delay section, as long the policy was purchased, and the trip booked prior to the strike dates being publicly announced or considered common knowledge.
Easter holidays
With school holidays fast approaching, you can take the opportunity to talk to your customers and use the JLU Holiday and Sports Travel scheme to get them the essential protection they need as soon as possible and As Soon As they Book.

As well as cancellation cover the policies also include:
- A fixed benefit for every 12 hours of delay due to strike or industrial
- Cover for abandonment if flights are delayed for more than the hours shown in the policy wording after arrival at the airport and check in.
- Cover for unused non-refundable pre-booked airport parking, car hire, airport lounge pass and excursions paid for or contracted to pay for.
Note – It would be wise to warn your customers, if they are delayed, to be wary of making their own alternative arrangements without contacting their airline and/or tour operator or you to check that the costs they will incur are covered.
