The British Insurance Brokers’ Association (BIBA) has named Samantha Lowry, Commercial Team Leader, of Gallagher, as its young broker of the year 2025.
The two runners-up from a field of exceptionally high quality were George Faulkner, Managing Director, of Merlin Insurance Brokers and Rob Nicholls, Regional Development Director of Everywhen.
The award recognises the performance, contribution and future potential of younger brokers and encourages commitment to the future professionalism of insurance broking.
Speaking about the winner BIBA Chief Executive, Graeme Trudgill said: “Samantha is a unique and inspirational young broker. She clearly loves working in insurance broking. Her commitment to bringing young people into the industry shone through. She is someone with a passion for insurance broking that motivates others in the sector which led to her starting a new BIBA Young Broker Committee in Northen Ireland, which is extremely well attended. She is highly professional, and her presentation skills are first class, all underpinned by a love of learning. She is the epitome of a successful young broker who will be a future leader of our sector.”
Though there can only be one winner, the judges were very impressed with all of the shortlisted young professionals, emphasising that the quality of entries really was exceptional this year. In choosing the other two finalists they highlighted that Rob is a spirited high performer with a positive energy who is self-motivated, has a strong sense of ethics, has a can-do attitude and puts clients first, all while overseeing an apprentice himself. We noted, in particular, that he is the youngest branch director and youngest regional development director at Everywhen, he is also well advanced in his CII qualifications. Rob will go far.
Explaining why George was also selected as a finalist the judges highlighted that his record speaks for itself, setting up Merlin Insurance Brokers in his twenties, building a team and investing strongly in the business. George is wonderfully articulate, has lashings of enthusiasm, an impressive business acumen and has worked hard and achieved great success.
Trudgill added: “I’m extremely proud of our three finalists. Not only do they shine with their desire to succeed they are all highly engaged with our sector. Role models like these will certainly help attract new talent into the world of insurance and continue to make insurance broking a career to be proud of.
The Oliver Rose BIBA Young Broker Award is judged by a range of independent insurance professionals and recognises the career progression, sector participation, professional education and development of BIBA member brokers aged 35 years or younger. The award was renamed in the memory of the late Oliver Rose, who sadly passed away in March 2023. Oliver was the BIBA Young Broker of the Year in 2016 and made some great contributions to our sector and his employer.
