We welcome the Government’s Road Safety Strategy and the steps proposed to improve road safety in GB. Lower frequency and severity (cost) of collisions would help reduce the cost of motor insurance premiums. Several of the proposals aim to improve outcomes for younger and older drivers (who often pay higher insurance premiums), including introducing a minimum learning period for learner drivers and mandatory eyesight testing for those over 70 and BIBA pleased that the Government is consulting on these to improve safety.
We support tougher action for driving without insurance as the cost of those claims is borne indirectly by insured motorists through the compulsory motor insurers’ levy.
The Government has said for some time that it plans to purse legislative reform for micromobility when Parliamentary time allows. We urge them to move more quickly to regulate these as the cost of claims from uninsured riders is around £50m in bodily injury costs annually (source FCA), which is also borne indirectly by insured motorists through the levy.
