Barrie Humphries (67) was disappointed that after 20 years of paying for a Lloyds Bank Platinum account that they were unable to cover his holiday to Cyprus once he had precautionary heart stents inserted. He has since cancelled his account which cost him £250 per year to provide travel insurance, motor breakdown and mobile phone cover. He was signposted by Lloyds Bank to BIBA’s Find Insurance Service who found specialist broker Just Travel who covered his holiday for £71 for a 10-day trip, including extra coverage for luggage.

Barrie commented: “At first I had to pay Lloyds bank an extra £150 to cover my travel insurance but after a tough first year of retirement, which included a tooth infection that turned to sepsis, a hospital stay and a third precautionary stent they said that they would no longer cover me. It really smacked me when Lloyds said that they couldn’t help especially after being with them for so many years. You would expect them to give you the protection, and not move the goal posts – but instead they wanted me to continue paying for the account despite not covering me. I toyed with the idea of travelling without insurance, but I wanted the peace of mind, especially as it was my first holiday after the pandemic. I’ve also saved the monthly account fee, which I’ve never claimed on.”
