As lockdown measures are eased in most of the country and people are starting to travel more freely, for summer holidays and the like, there are a few important things that you should keep in mind about your car insurance.

1. MOT holiday

The six-month test exemption introduced on 30 March has now been cut short. As of 1 August, mandatory MOTs are to be reintroduced.

The grace period was put in place initially in response to the coronavirus lockdown affecting garages. Even then, motorists were responsible for ensuring their cars were roadworthy or else they would face a fine. So, if your car needs its MOT make sure you make an appointment at your local garage as without a valid MOT certificate your car insurance will not be valid.

2. Driving abroad

We’ve had months of lockdown restrictions and as we are now in the school holiday period, many people in the UK are eager to go on holiday. Many are opting to drive rather than fly because of the pandemic.

If you are planning on driving to continental Europe, you should check with your insurer to make sure you have the cover you need. Policies can vary and, in the event, you had an accident, or your car broke down you may be left with a large bill.

You should also make sure you understand the local driving regulations of the country you are driving in. Obey the traffic signs and signals and carry the documentation and equipment you may legally need to have.

3. Check your car

If your car hasn’t been used for a while, it’s important to make some checks before you get on the road again!

Ensuring you have valid tax and insurance is a must, but also more physical tests on your car should be completed.

Think about checking your tyre pressures, car fluids (such as brake fluid, coolant, oil and windscreen wash), your battery, brakes, and your headlights.
