The Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV) has released two publications that form part of implementation of the Automated Vehicles (AVs) Act 2024:
(2) a statutory consultation on the draft SoSPs.
Alongside this, the Government is also publishing a deliberative research report on public perceptions of safety and ‘careful and competent’ driving, commissioned by the Department for Transport (DfT) and delivered by DG Cities, Reed Mobility and DJS Research.
The SoSP is a cornerstone of the AV safety framework. It will guide the Secretary of State for Transport’s decisions on whether an automated vehicle can be deployed on Great Britain’s roads and will inform ongoing monitoring of authorised vehicles. The draft principles are framed around the AV Act 2024 safety standard: a level of safety equivalent to at least that of careful and competent human drivers. The principles cover five broad themes: vehicle control; hazard anticipation, perception and reaction; obeying traffic rules; interaction with other road users; and adaptability to road conditions. The consultation on the draft SoSP will be open until 9 September 2026. Subject to the outcome, the statutory SoSP will be laid before Parliament next year for approval.
