Securing Insurer and Market Access
One of the first challenges many newly authorised brokers face is turning their business plan into a trading business. No matter how strong your proposition is, you’ll need access to insurer markets and products before you can begin serving customers.
The quality of your insurer relationships can influence everything from your ability to win business and meet customer needs, through to profitability, growth and customer retention. Building those relationships takes time, so it’s important to develop a clear market access strategy from the outset.
Key Considerations:
For many start-up brokers, joining a broker network can provide a quicker route to market and reduce some of the challenges associated with securing individual insurer agencies.
Networks typically negotiate insurer relationships on behalf of their members, providing immediate access to established insurer panels and facilities that may otherwise take months or years to build independently.
If you choose to establish direct insurer agencies, relationship management becomes a core business activity.
Once an insurer agrees to work with you, you’ll typically be asked to enter into a Terms of Business Agreement (TOBA).
For a start-up business, these agreements should be reviewed carefully and understood fully before signing.
Some insurers may also request personal guarantees from directors, particularly where the business is newly established or does not have a significant trading history. These guarantees can expose directors personally if the company fails to meet its obligations, so independent legal advice should always be considered.
