Tackling fraud; BIBA welcomes the chancellor’s measures in his Autumn Statement

BIBA was delighted to see measures to reduce fraudulent whiplash claims in today’s Autumn Statement.
Steve White, BIBA CEO said; “In our 2015 Manifesto we supported Aviva’s proposal for the rehabilitation of sufferers of whiplash injuries; We called on Government to consult on moving to a system of ‘care not cash’ and to raise the small claims track limit to £5,000. The chancellor’s confirmation that he is ending the right to cash compensation for whiplash injuries and increasing the upper limit for claims in the small claims court to £5000 is exactly what we wanted. These measures will lead to fairer premiums for law-abiding motorists.”

BIBA, along with Aviva, wanted to see the number of whiplash claims fall from an astounding 1300 per day and reducing the financial incentive to make such claims is a firm step in the right direction. As well as reducing the cost of fraud that is inevitably passed on to the customer, this measure will ensure that those that suffer genuine injuries can access the treatment they need to help them recover.
