INTRODUCTION

The BIBA Litmus Test Report (BLTR) is offered by BIBA to its members in response to member feedback which highlighted the need for additional support when evaluating unrated non-life insurers. It has been designed as an informational learning tool to help brokers develop an understanding of the financial profile of such insurers. The BLTR provides background educational information on the use of the audited data of an insurer in reviewing its financial profile, coupled with a table which provides an example of some commonly used basic ratios in assessing the performance and strength of an insurer. Each insurer’s ratios are compared to a benchmark calculated from a representative sample of UK insurers. The test covers a list of unrated insurers sourced by BIBA in consultation with its members and the underlying financial/accounting data is supplied by A.M.Best with the educational materials, ratio calculations and benchmark calculations provided by Litmus Analysis. The BLTR is intended for reference by BIBA members only and has been designed with this purpose in mind. It is not designed to be shared outside of a member’s organisation. Where any information provided through the BLTR is shared within a member’s organisation, the contents of this disclaimer should also be communicated.

The BLTR is provided for information only and by providing the BLTR or including any insurer within it no opinion is being offered by BIBA, Litmus Analysis or A.M. Best as to the financial health or any other characteristics of the insurers covered and no reliance should be placed on the BLTR or the information it provides. The analysis of an insurer’s financial strength is a highly skilled and complex area and the content of the BLTR is not intended to give a complete or conclusive picture of the financial profile of the given carrier. BIBA is merely seeking to help its members better understand and interpret the financial and accounting data which is already available to them. The content of the BLTR must be viewed as supporting information only and not a third party opinion. BIBA accepts no responsibility for the use made of the information accessible through the BLTR and shall not be liable for any loss or damage whatsoever which may arise from its use. BIBA will make every effort to provide the BLTR with reasonable care and skill but it does not make any warranties about the completeness, reliability, fitness for a particular purpose and accuracy of the information it contains. It should also be borne in mind that the data used is taken from the most recent accounts contained in the A.M. Best data service, which will, by its very nature, be historical and therefore not necessarily indicative of the current year or future profile. Any action taken upon the information accessible through the BLTR is strictly at your own risk and no liability is accepted for errors or omissions.

AVAILABILITY

Whilst every effort is made to keep the BLTR up and running smoothly BIBA makes no guarantee as to availability of the BLTR and it does not warrant that functions available through the BLTR will be uninterrupted or error free, that defects will be corrected, or that the server that makes it available is free of viruses or bugs. BIBA also reserves the right to withdraw the BLTR at any time. BIBA takes no responsibility for and will not be liable for the BLTR being temporarily or permanently unavailable.
