Welcome from East Midlands Chairman, Grant Scott
2013 will bring much to celebrate, but will also give us it many challenges to face as we aim to take our businesses forward. We are all aware of the very difficult economic climate, more reason to be a BIBA member, whose support and help is paramount in these turbulent times.
The challenges faced by our profession are ever increasing, changing and, with the economic situation as it is, we are likely to face another difficult 12 months ahead.
Competition remains fierce and markets volatile. The Regulator is about to change, and with the demise of the FSA, it is possible we shall see a more invasive regulator, acting also as a consumer champion, with a change of focus likely to create extra burdens, both in terms of costs and resources. Brokers face increased fees from the FSCS as well as the regulator, and BIBA continues to argue strongly that its members should not be unfairly penalised because the FSCS implementation of the rules means that we end up paying for the failures of credit brokers – this is one of the major issues that BIBA have been working on with Government and Treasury.
BIBA adds value for all its members, regardless of size or type of operation, and I see it as my job to communicate the facilities available to members, and to encourage you and your staff to access these facilities and to engage in debate with us at all levels.
The East Midlands Regional Committee is in place to represent member firms both centrally and regionally. The members of the committee all volunteers, have a wealth of experience and are here to offer advice and help wherever they can and I really hope that many of you will call on this experience at some point soon.
We will continue to hold seminars and events locally across a number of locations to ensure that you can access events with as little travelling time as possible. Some of these events will be breakfast meetings to ensure that your working day is not disrupted too much. These have been designed to take into account your feedback and views so I do hope that you will find time to attend. Please remember that our strength is in our numbers and we all have a part to play in the success of our profession.
I look forward to seeing you at future events.
